Construction Begins September 2026
The Farmington Community Library is starting renovation projects at both FCL locations as part of the first phase of the Library's Facilities Masterplan. These improvements will update aging infrastructure, improve accessibility, and create new spaces for the community to gather, study, and play.
Construction is is tentatively scheduled to begin September 8, 2026. While timelines may change as work progresses, Phase One is currently anticipated to be completed in June 2027.
All Phase One projects are funded through the Library's operating budget.
What to Expect During Construction
Both buildings are expected to remain open during construction unless temporary closures are required for safety. Visitors should anticipate reduced parking availability and increased noise during portions of the projects. Some spaces, collections, and services may be temporarily unavailable or relocated during certain phases of construction.
The Library will work to minimize disruptions whenever possible. Construction schedules may change as work progresses, and we’ll continue to provide updates throughout the project. Please check this page regularly for the latest updates before your visit.
We know construction can be an inconvenience, and we sincerely appreciate your patience and understanding while this work is underway. These improvements are an investment in the future of your Library, and we're excited to welcome the community into these updated spaces as each project is completed.

Upcoming Service Impacts
Farmington Hills Location
Beginning in September (estimated 1-3 weeks)
The exact start date has not been determined.
The half of the building that includes the Fiction Browsing Room, Teen Area, and lower-level Children's Department is expected to close.
Materials from these collections will remain available through the catalog and may be placed on hold for pickup when ready. Children’s programming will take place as scheduled.
September – November
The front (northwest) parking lot will be closed. Parking will remain available in the side lot and overflow parking area behind the Library. Regular curbside pickup will be unavailable. Accommodation requests for pickup service will be available.
November – June
The Heritage Room will be repurposed for Children's Services.
December – June
The Children's Department will be closed for construction. Select children's collections and technology will be relocated to the Heritage Room for public use. Children's Services staff will be available in the Heritage Room to provide services.
Farmington Location
September – June
The entire building will be enclosed by fencing except for access to the materials return slot and the building entrance on the parking lot side. The Liberty Street entrance will be closed.
Curbside pickup will be unavailable. Request pickup at Farmington Hills if needed.
November – December
Elevator service will be unavailable. The entrance on the parking lot side will be closed. The Liberty Street entrance will reopen during this phase and a temporary accessible ramp will be installed.

The existing Quiet Study Room will be reconfigured to create several new small-group study rooms.

An outdoor study and reading garden will be constructed in the currently unused corner outside the main entrance.

The lower-level Children’s Department will receive several targeted improvements, including a newly constructed entryway, Information Desk, and family-style restrooms. Please note that these improvements are focused on specific areas of the department; the project does not include a renovation of the entire Children’s Department.

An outdoor amphitheater will be constructed in the currently unused corner at State Street and Liberty Street.
Farmington Location
The Children’s Department will have a newly constructed outdoor playspace accessible from the lower-level Children’s Department.
