Learn to Compost at Home + Seed Library Kickoff
Celebrate the coming of spring with the opening of the Farmington Community Seed Library! Join us on Saturday, March 14 at 2 p.m. for “Learn to Compost at Home + Seed Library Kickoff.” During this program, you’ll learn the basics of composting at home, including the Bokashi method for composting kitchen scraps and how compost can create a rich, living soil amendment for your garden.
Attendees will also be the first to browse and select seeds from this year’s Seed Library collection (limit of five packets per family). After the event, seeds will be available while supplies last.

What is the Seed Library?
The Seed Library offers free seeds that grow well in our local area. Gardeners are encouraged to save seeds from their harvest and return some to the Library, helping the collection grow and allowing more people in the community to plant them in the seasons to come.
The Seed Library is kept at our Farmington Hills location (32737 W. 12 Mile Rd.) on the main level in one of the original card catalogs. Seed varieties change each season and are available while supplies last.
How to use the Seed Library?
- Browse the Seed Library and select varieties based on what you enjoy eating or growing, as well as the amount of space and sunlight you have available.
- Please limit your selection to 5 seed packets per family so more community members can participate.
- Each packet contains enough seeds to grow at least three plants. Smaller seeds are measured so you’ll still have enough for a productive crop.
- Most seeds should be planted outdoors after the risk of frost has passed in our area—usually late May to early June.
- At the end of the season, consider saving seeds from your harvest. If you’re able, bring some back to the Farmington Community Seed Library to help grow the collection for your neighbors next year.
